When Every Feeling Gets a Label

Children know the terms—but do they understand them?

Today's children are growing up fluent in the language of mental health. Terms like anxiety, trauma, triggered, and toxic are no longer confined to therapists' offices—they've become part of everyday conversations, social media feeds, and school hallways. While this increased awareness is helping reduce stigma around mental health, it also raises an important question for parents: are children learning emotional understanding, or simply learning emotional labels?

34% of teenagers get mental health information from social media, and nearly two-thirds consider it an important source of that information.

The challenge begins when clinical terms are used to describe ordinary human experiences. Feeling nervous before an exam becomes "anxiety." A disagreement becomes "trauma." A difficult conversation becomes "triggering." While emotional awareness is valuable, not every uncomfortable feeling signals a mental health condition. Learning to handle disappointment, frustration, rejection, and failure remains an essential part of healthy emotional development.

1 in 7 adolescents aged 10–19 experiences a mental health disorder, making emotional literacy more important than ever.

Children need language for their emotions, but they also need perspective. Knowing the word anxiety is helpful; understanding the difference between normal nervousness and an anxiety disorder is even more important. True emotional literacy goes beyond naming feelings—it involves understanding them, managing them, and learning how to respond to them constructively.

When children use terms like toxic, triggered, anxiety, or trauma, focus less on the label and more on the experience behind it. Ask questions. Listen carefully. Help them distinguish between everyday emotional challenges and situations that may require additional support. The goal is not to eliminate difficult feelings—it is to help children develop the resilience and understanding needed to navigate them.
